About our speakers
Gary Petersen, CPA
A+P CPAs
Founding Partner, Managing Partner & Director of Opportunity
If you’ve met Gary Petersen, CPA, you already know he’s not your typical accountant. He’s one of the Founding Partners, Managing Partner, and proudly holds the title of Director of Opportunity at A+P CPAs—which says a lot about how he leads. With over 30 years in the business, Gary has worked in just about every corner of public accounting: tax strategy, entity selection, estate planning, nonprofit consulting, business advisory—you name it, he’s been there, done that, and probably helped make it better.
That “Director of Opportunity” title isn’t just for show—it’s how he operates. Whether he’s helping business owners make smarter decisions or giving team members the support and space they need to grow, his goal is simple: create opportunities that lead to real success. Around here, he’s the guy constantly reminding everyone to put family first—and making sure the firm’s culture actually supports that.
Gary also spends a lot of time giving back. He’s a longtime educator with the Associated Builders and Contractors, where he teaches contractors how to level up their businesses, run lean and smart, and keep more of what they earn. He’s passionate about helping people become not just better business owners, but better leaders.
And if you think that sounds like a full plate—just wait. Gary served 22 years on the West Point City Council, 18 years on the North Davis Fire District Board, and has twice chaired the Davis Chamber of Commerce, earning the chamber’s Legacy Award along the way. He’s also deeply involved with PARC (Pioneer Adult Rehabilitation Center), an incredible nonprofit that helps adults with disabilities thrive. PARC is part of ServiceSource, a $250 million non-profit organization where Gary currently serves as Chairman of the Board.
But even with all that going on, he keeps things grounded. His favorite title? Grandpa. When he’s not mentoring clients or shaping firm strategy, you’ll probably find him crawling on the floor with a grandkid or out cycling Utah’s backroads. (And not just casually—he’s conquered the LOTOJA: a brutal 206-mile race with 10,000 feet of climbing through three mountain passes – seven times. He swears it’s fun.)
Gary and his wife Carolyn love to travel, including trips to Europe and the Greek islands, chasing “pinch me” moments and soaking up as much life as possible. Whether he’s leading a board meeting, teaching a tax class, or passing out snacks to toddlers on the floor, Gary shows up with heart, energy, and the kind of perspective that reminds you what really matters.
